In Memoriam

Last week I received devastating news that a lovely young woman, whose life I had been documenting, had suddenly died in her sleep.

Camille “Cami” Baruch was only 19 years old, but she had already endured nine surgeries in an attempt to repair gastro-intestinal damage caused by a generic version of the acne drug, Acutane.

Others injured by the name-brand version of this drug have received some financial relief from their medical costs through the courts. Sadly, while Cami and her family suffered the same physical and financial trauma, those same courts ruled that they were not eligible for compensation, because she had been prescribed the generic version of the same drug.

Though she suffered daily, Cami was not defined by her illness.

She was a bright, funny, beautiful young woman who had dreams of becoming a surgeon. I have no doubt that she would have been a compassionate and brilliant doctor. I spent time with her at home, at school, at doctor’s appointments and at the hospital and I developed a profound respect for her and her very supportive family. Cami and her story have deeply affected me and I am committed to completing the project.

Everyone who met Cami was dazzled by her wit, sense of humor and courage and the world has lost a shining example of what it means to be human. I join her family and friends in remembering a brave and beautiful young woman; Cami Baruch.

Beautiful tribute to Cami. As long as people remember us, we will never die.She lived a short and meaningful life, and is gone too soon.

    Ms. Calvert:

Truly moving and compassionate tribute to a young person taken too soon. I lost my kid sister, a special soul, 36 years ago when she was 22. Cami’s family must be devastated; it’s a small comfort that she went in her sleep.

I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labors, and the finished project. Sincerest condolences.

    best wishes,
