2014 Eyes of History

In Washington D.C., our local news photographers’ organization is the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA). It is an outstanding organization made up of still and video photographers and editors who live and work in the D.C. metropolitan area covering the White House, Capitol Hill and the endless assortment of scandals, feats and news that unfolds in our nation’s capital.

Each winter the WHNPA holds their “Eyes of History” competition to select the best photographs made by its members during the calendar year.

I am pleased to report that I was the runner-up in the Political Portfolio category during last week’s judging at the National Geographic Society in downtown D.C.

The judges for the still photography division of the competition were Sarah Leen, Director of Photography, National Geographic Magazine; Tim Rasmussen, AME for photography and multimedia at The Denver Post; and John Stanmeyer, a founding member of Vll photo agency.

My project “The Battle Within: Examining Rape in America’s Military” was part of my political portfolio and was also granted an award of excellence in the issue reporting picture story category in the Pictures of the Year International competition.

Congrats to “Photographer of the Year”, independent photographer Astrid Riecken, Win McNamee of Getty Images, who won “Political Photo of the Year”, and all the other winners of the 2014 “The Eyes of History” competition.
